On Tuesday the 16th of September 2014, Parliament debated the DA’s motion of no confidence in Speaker Baleka Mbete.

Here are some of the highlights of the chaos that ensued. 


DA Parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane delivers a passionate speech during the debate on the Motion of No Confidence in Speaker Baleka Mbete

EFF MP Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala debates the Motion of No Confidence in Speaker Baleka Mbete. Argues for the role of Speaker of Parliament to be taken over by retired judges. Mbete, who is also the chairperson of the majority ANC, is being accused of being biased.

Minister of Sports and Culture Fikile Mbalula weighs in on the debate, waxing lyrical about the perceived attacks on his colleague. Countless points of order on his speech derail the debate. The handling of the debate by House Chairperson Cedric Thomas Frolick is called into question by members from various parties.

Honourable Mabe, an ANC MP, launches a scathing attack on EFF leader Julius Malema and Mmusi Maimane. She goes on to call the DA Parliamentary leader a bastard, among other things.

DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen argues that the conflict of interest between Baleka Mbete’s role as Speaker of Parliament and Chairperson of the ruling ANC is too great.
