In a shock announcement from the BCCI on Tuesday, the Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement from test cricket with immediate effect.

The statement said MS Dhoni had decided to call an end to his test cricket career citing “the strain of playing all formats of cricket”.

Virat Kholi will take over captaincy duties for the remainder of India’s tour to Australia.

MS Dhoni, who captained the Indian test cricket team for the majority of his career, had previously led the Indian team to the top of the test rankings. India is currently ranked number 3 in the ICC test rankings following a poor run of form away from home.

Dhoni, who also captains IPL side the Chennai Super Kings, is said to want to focus more of his energies on the ODI and T20 formats.
